THE DALLES, Ore. -- A new brush fire broke out Sunday afternoon south of The Dalles in Wasco County and grew to about 165 acres by Monday morning, though fire officials said crews were making good progress in containing it.

Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched around 3:15 p.m. Sunday to the reported brush fire in the 4700 block of Orchard Road. The Orchard Fire burned into an area jointly protected by that fire agency and the Oregon Department of Forestry, and they remained in unified command Monday morning.

"Firefighters made significant progress overnight," the Monday morning update said. "Crews successfully completed planned firing operations, with those operations concluding at approximately 2:00 a.m. As of this morning, the Orchard Fire is estimated at approximately 165 acres."

Resources assigned to the fire Monday included a 20-person hand crew and six fire engines, along with unified command and overhead personnel.

One barn and one small outbuilding were lost in the fire. No other buildings or residences have been damaged.

In an update later Monday, officials said: "Firefighters made good progress throughout the day, improving and securing containment lines around the fire perimeter. The fire remains estimated at approximately 165 acres. A portion of the reported acreage includes areas intentionally burned during firing operations conducted to strengthen and secure the fire perimeter."

They said crews will transition to patrol status overnight, monitoring the fire area and addressing any hot spots or concerns that develop.

Day-shift resources will return Tuesday to continue mop-up, containment-line improvement, hazard tree removal, and securing the fire perimeter.

Weather conditions remain favorable for firefighting operations, with light winds expected, officials said.

Smoke may remain visible from the fire area Monday night and Tuesday as interior fuels and hot spots continue to smolder. Smoke from within the fire perimeter does not necessarily indicate that the fire has escaped containment lines.

ODF and MCFR personnel will continue monitoring conditions and working to secure the fire area. Additional information will be released as conditions or operations change.

Officials said Sunday evening that aircraft assigned to the nearly 94,000-acre Grasshoper fire to the southwest, now 98% contained, were assisting with containment efforts.
